Brooklyn Alternate-Side Parking
Alt-Parking, short for alternate side parking, are a set of NYC and Brooklyn parking regulations that allow for frequent street cleaning in order to combat the greater New York Metro ‘s excessive trash. Most areas enforced with alt-side parking are physically marked by a sign that features a red “P” that is crossed out by a broom. Virtually all of Brooklyn Heights falls under alt-side parking restrictions. All areas marked as alt-side parking are subject to suspension for holidays and emergencies, but typically are on restricted for varying 3 hour time periods. Brooklyn Street Parking
Below are some of the best options for street parking within each respective Brooklyn neighborhood:
Brooklyn Heights Parking: Although a a strict no parking zone on Furman Street, there is limited street parking available during the day, in between Cadman Plaza W and Furman. This area is subject to alt-side parking, so be sure to check signage and choose wisely.
Bushwick Parking: Other than Bushwick Ave, most streets offer free parking with limited availability. Myrtle Ave offers 1 hour metered parking all day. Most streets offer free overnight and evening parking if you are able to find a spot.
Fort Greene Parking: All streets north of Fulton offer on street parking if you’re fortunate enough to come across it. Read signs to abide all parking restrictions before leaving your vehicle.
Gowanus Parking: From 1st St to 16th St in between Prospect Park West and the Highway offer unmetered street parking. Please check up to date signs for relevant restrictions.
Prospect Heights Parking: Most streets south of Atlantic Ave offer un-metered street parking. However, it is difficult to come by! At night, most of Prospect Heights offers free street parking, however, that status may change in the morning.
Park Slope Parking: Any side street off of 7th Ave is free street parking most days. Be sure to read signage for restrictions.
Williamsburg Parking: During the day, there is a square zone with free street parking. The perimeters are: Grand Street to Bushwick Ave to Meeker Ave. Some street have alt-side parking imposed, but most do not. Metropolitan ave, which cuts through the middle of this are, is a no park street during the day, but is okay to park overnight until 7am. Most streets in Williamsburg offer free or metered parking in the evenings and overnight.
